The Metropolitan Opera: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego (2026)
American composer Gabriela Lena Frank makes her Met debut with her first opera, a magical realist portrait of the Mexican painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The libretto is by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Nilo Cruz. Inspired by the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, the story follows Frida, sung by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, as she leaves the underworld on the Day of the Dead and is reunited with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez.
